The Prints of William Walmsley
October 29, 2013 - July 8, 2014
The Cummer Museum
of Art & Gardens website announces the exhibition The Prints of William
Walmsley, being held October 29, 2013 through July 8, 2014 as follows:
- A professor at Florida State University, Bill Walmsley
was known for his blatant irony, raucous humor, and shameless punning.
He is also regarded as an impressive printmaker (he holds the record for
the longest series of prints in the history of art) and the inventor of
florescent lithography. His works are in the collections of the High Museum
of Art, Muscarelle Museum at William and Mary, Brooklyn Museum of Art,
Mint Museum, and Columbus Museum, among others. This exhibition will highlight
the works by Walmsley in The Cummer's permanent collection.
Introductory wall panel text from the exhibition
- William Walmsley was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1923.
After serving in World War II, he studied art at the Académie Julian
in Paris and later at the Atelier of Edmond & Jacques Desjobert in
that same city. The Desojobert atelier was a meeting place for many artists,
especially those new to lithography and interested in experimentation.
As a professor at Florida State University, Walmsley soon made a name for
his blatant irony, raucous humor, and shameless punning. Walmsley is known
for being an impressive printmaker. The inventor of florescent lithography,
he holds the record for the longest series of prints in the history of
art; his alter ego "Ding Dong Daddy" is the subject of this series
of prints that began in the 1960s. This self-exploration continued until
his death in 2003. His works are in the collections of the High Museum
of Art, Muscarelle Museum at William and Mary, Brooklyn Museum of Art,
Mint Museum, and Columbus Museum, among others.
