Eliot O'Hara: Ring of Fire

April 24, 2015 - June 13, 2015

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto is presenting its latest exhibition, Eliot O'Hara: Ring of Fire, on view April 24 through June 13, 2015. The exhibition features more than 90 works from America's most popular watercolorist of the mid-20th century.

Titled "Ring of Fire," the exhibition centers on a part of the world that is often brought to our attention by catastrophe. The Ring of Fire, or Pacific Rim, is frequently the site of tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, yet its beauty is unrivaled. O'Hara painted all of the watercolors on location over the course of many years, ranging from Mexico and South America in the 1930s; the Pacific coast of North America from the 1930s to the 1960s; Hawaii in 1939; Alaska in 1940; and New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and Fiji during the 1950s. On loan from Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Fla., the exhibition debuted in 2006 before traveling to venues in Florida, South Dakota and Illinois. Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art's exhibition will mark the first time Ring of Fire has been displayed in nearly eight years.

O'Hara was a life member of the National Academy and American Watercolor Society. Represented in more than 70 museum collections, the artist is renowned for having the ability to capture the essence of any locale. O'Hara authored six watercolor instruction books and, through the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 20 films for art schools.
