The Ralph K. Davies Collection of Western Art at the Monterey Museum of Art
Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell are regarded as two of
the most prominent artists of the American West. Contemporaries of one another,
they lived and worked during the late 1800s through the early 1900s, when
the Wild West was still a reality in the United States. (left: Charles
M. Russell, Bucker and Buckeroo (also known as The Weaver),
c. 1911, bronze, 15 x 7 1/4 x 10 inches, 183.49)
Their experiences and lifestyles are reflected in bold
paintings and bronze sculptures that capture a
place lost long ago: the last frontier. The Ralph
K. Davies Collection at the Monterey Museum of Art consists primarily of
the works of Charles Russell; Frederic Remington is represented by one of
his most famous works, The Bronco Buster. There are twelve Russell
bronzes and fifteen watercolors, ink sketches and oil paintings on rotating
display at the museum. (left: Frederic Remington, The Bronco Buster,
