Internet Virtual Tour of Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens Showcases Garden, Rooms and Yuletide Decorations
Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens is now open for virtual tours on the Internet at http://www.historichouston.org. On the virtual tour, visitors use their computer mouse to guide them through selected rooms and gardens of the estate, which is the center for American decorative arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Placing the cursor on an image and dragging the mouse allows visitors to pan 360 degrees, as if they were standing in one spot and turning in a circle to view everything around them. Some views also are cylindrical, allowing visitors to pan up and down. For a closer look, a zoom function can be activated.
Images for the tour were taken and compiled by Historic Houston, a non-profit organization whose goal is to increase historical awareness, encourage factual and scholarly research, and recognize important local architects and architecture.
Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens is one of the first sites for which Historic Houston compiled a virtual tour. The Bayou Bend tour includes a beautiful image of the Diana Garden looking toward the house from behind the fountain. Interior views include Philadelphia Hall and the Drawing Room. In addition, images of some rooms decorated for the annual Yuletide observance may be visited virtually through January 2, 2000.
Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens houses a remarkable collection of American decorative arts and painting. Founded by renowned collector and Houston philanthropist Miss Ima Hogg, the collection is displayed in her former residence, Bayou Bend. The collection traces the evolution of style in America from the colonial period to the mid-nineteenth century. It comprises more than 5,000 works, including furniture, paintings, metals, ceramics, glass, and textiles. Formal gardens and wooded ravines surround the impressive home. The site was recently named a "national landmark for landscape architecture" by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
