Arizona History Through Art: The Last 100 Years

January 8, 2000 - April 16, 2000

As the nation slips into the new millennium, Phippen Museum takes a nostalgic and poignant view of the art and artists who provided important contributions to Arizona's rich history. Works by more than 75 well-known artists will be displayed in the exhibit opening to the public on Saturday, January 8 and running through April 16, 2000.

Early 20th century artists Maynard Dixon,William Robinson Leigh, James Guifford Swinnerton, and others will be represented together with more contemporary artists; Howard Terpning, Roy Andersen, Duane Bryers, and Ken Riley. Several major museums are contributing work including the Tucson Museum of Art, the Desert Caballeros Art Museum and the Museum of Northern Arizona. The Arizona Historical Society will lend a number of works along with several Arizona galleries and private collectors from around the State.

Supported by generous funding from Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc.; the Prescott Corral of Westerners International; and Dr. and Mrs. Robert Stragnell, the exhibit will be augmented with several notable speakers lecturing on the significant artists from the last 100 years, documentary film presentations and decent-led tours for children and adults.
