American Art of the 1930s and 1940s

In the 1930s, American art took a unique point of view independent of pioneering European developments in theme and style. These included treating, in surprising ways, social concerns and aspects of traditional American life. This continued through the 1940s. In the last fifteen years, the Mobile Museum of Art has focused much of its collecting efforts in this period. The exhibition "American Art of the 1930s and 1940s" is a representative selection from the museum's permanent collection united with complementary works especially borrowed from the Schoen Family Collection to give a diverse picture of the period. Jason Schoen has recently added to his loans a work by the Alabama artist Charles E. Shannon (1914-1996), "Street Corner in Montgomery" (1936), a purchase which set an auction record for the works by this artist.

The exhibition will remain on display on the 2nd floor balcony of the Mobile Museum of Art through November 23, 1999.
