Walter Robinson Wood Sculpture
On Sunday September 19, 1999 The Gallery at Villa Montalvo will
open a solo exhibition of sculpture from wood by San Francisco artist Waiter
Robinson. "In an age of information and virtual reality, I think it
is important to look at our changing relationship with physical objects"
said Robinson. The artist is working on a surprise piece for this exhibition
created from wood directly harvested from the Montalvo grounds. Robinson
works his pieces to the most visceral properties; making use of all dimensions,
eliciting the most hidden inherent forms to articulate his ideas. His sculptures
vary in size and method of making, but they are always a manifestation of
juxtaposing unlikely visual references. For some pieces he chooses a color
element such as paint or light stain, others are in the raw. The Montalvo
setting will be a most synergistic place to view his work.
Walter Robinson is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery,
San Francisco. His work is in many collections, some international. In the
Bay Area region, most notably, his work is included in the important collection
of The di Rosa Preserve, Napa, Ca. He has trained at regional Art Schools
and holds a Master of Fine Art degree (MFA) from Lone Mountain College,
San Francisco. He was awarded and held a residency at Djerassi in Woodside,
Ca. in the Spring of 1998.
Villa Montalvo is a non-profit organization dedicated to
advancing the appreciation of the arts and music through diverse programs.
Montalvo supports the Gallery at Montalvo, Children's Education Outreach,
the internationally-recognized Artist Residency Program, and Literary Arts
activities through concert proceeds and member donations, corporate and
foundation support.
