Rowan LeCompte and Donald Furst
March 10 -- June 4, 2000
Two Wilmington-based artists will hold their first solo exhibitions at St. John's Museum of Art starting March 10, 2000 when "Rowan LeCompte: Sixty Years of Color and Light" and "Quintet: Five Print Suites by Donald Furst" open at St. John's Museum of Art.
"Rowan LeCompte: Sixty Years of Color and Light"
is sponsored by Kothe Howard Marketing
Communications, of Charlotte, and features the vibrant
colors and glass constructions of the veteran artist who designed and installed
more than 45 windows for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
The exhibition also unveils LeCompte's window entitled "Two Trees amid
Harvest," which in the fall of 2001 will celebrate its inaugural installation
in the museum's new facility, the Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum. Commissioned
and donated by Mrs. Paul Mellon, the window is five-feet in diameter and
will be the focal point of the museum's new 150-seat auditorium. (right:

"Quintet:
Five Print Suites by Donald Furst" represents the first comprehensive
solo exhibition of UNC Wilmington faculty member Donald Furst's prints in
southeastern North Carolina. Quintet unveils his most recent explorations
in mezzotint, intaglio, lithography, monotype and the experimental media
of vitreography and computer-aided photopolymer print. Recognized
in highly competitive print competitions around the world, Furst currently
lives in Wilmington and has served on the art faculty of UNC-W's College
of Arts and Sciences since 1985. He was one of ten American artists
whose work was accepted in the 1999 Norwegian International Print Triennial,
Frederikstad, Norway. He has also participated in the 1998 International
Print Triennials in Lahti, Finland, Krakow, Poland and the 1998 Agart World
Print Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia. (left: Donald Furst, Acclivity)
Dr.
Kemille S. Moore, chair of UNC Wilmington's department of art and theatre,
contributed the scholarly essay for the Quintet exhibition. A preview reception
for the exhibitions will be held Thursday, March 9, 7-9 p.m. Admission
to the reception is $2 for St. John's Museum of Art members and $5 for the
general public. Several educational events, including artist walk-through
tours and lectures, have been scheduled in conjunction with these exhibitions. (left: Donald Furst, Mezotint)
