African-American Art: 20th Century Masterworks,VII

 

From March 18 to April 30, 2000, The Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida is pleased and honored to present "African-American Art: 20th Century Masterworks, VII." This exhibition, celebrating the vast and all too often unrecognized accomplishments of 20th century African-American artists, is the seventh in a series of annual exhibitions organized by Michael Rosenfeld Gallery in New York City. Each year the exhibition is presented in New York and then made available for display at a public museum elsewhere in America. (left: work by Romare Bearden)

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to present this exhibition," writes Professor Jeffrey Spalding, Director of The Appleton Museum of Art, in the Foreword to the exhibition catalogue. "The series,'African-American Art: 20th Century Masterworks,' brings together outstanding examples by artists of real merit whose individual achievements and offered experiences deserve to be better known by a wider segment of the public." Historically, African-American artists have encountered a society which relegated them to its periphery, but the tide has begun to change. In recent years, America has witnessed a remarkable surge of exhibitions, publications, and articles which have dramatically increased exposure and with this exposure has come the possibility for long overdue recognition. Presenting more than forty historic worksópaintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture by more than thirty artists, this exhibition aspires to continue this trend toward increasing education, awareness, and much-deserved appreciation. A reception celebrating this exhibition will be held on Friday, March 31, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in conjunction with the opening of two other exhibitions: "Art of Our Century Part II: Modern Art at Millennium's End" and "In the Hands of the Master." The public is invited to attend the reception.

A full color catalog of the exhibition, including biographical notes on all the artists, is available in the Gift Gallery. Docent-led tours are conducted at 1:15 PM Monday through Friday.
