Art and the Animal: An Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists
One of the nation's most prominent collections of wildlife art unveiled
a new special exhibit in July, the largest ever organized. Art and the
Animal: An Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists is on display
at the John L. Wehle Gallery of Sporting Art at Genesee Country Village
& Museum through October 17, 1999.
This special show, the biggest ever displayed at the gallery, consists of 49 paintings and 15 sculptures by 61 artists, all members of the Society of Animal Artists (SAA). Artistic renditions include domestic animals, such as dogs, cats and horses, and wildlife spanning the food chain from butterflies to elephants.
Founded in 1960, the SAA is the oldest and most prestigious association of animal and wildlife painters and sculptors in the world representing the top of the field in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Australia. Membership is determined by a jury of society painters and sculptors with a wide range of artistic outlooks and disciplines.
Each of the selected artists in this exhibit exceptionally portrays the beauty, awe and mystery within the natural world, ultimately enhancing the viewer's sense of responsibility and love of nature.
This
is the first society exhibition in this region in six years. This exhibition
will appear in only two museums in 1999: the Leigh
Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin and the John L. Wehle
Gallery of Sporting Art at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Many society
members, such as Robert Kuhn, Kenneth Bunn, John Schoenherr and Dan Ostermiller,
are part of the gallery's permanent collection.
