Point to Point: Landscape
Paintings by Willard Dixon and Peter Loftus
Large scale
landscape paintings by Willard Dixon and Peter Loftus will be on view at
the Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College from June 10 through August
13, 2000. The exhibition, "Point to Point," showcases the coastline
from Point Lobos to Point Reyes so vividly depicted by Dixon and Loftus.
Few living artists have captured the breathtaking geography and dazzling
beauty of the Central and Northern California coast with such virtuosity
as Dixon and Loftus, who have in common a remarkably adroit ability to create
vivid color and precise rendering to imbue the formal landscape with a compelling
contemporary aesthetic.
Steven
Jenkins, Art Week Contributing Editor, says of Dixon in the February
1995 issue, that "it is precisely his sincere investment in tile tradition
of realist landscape painting, with its attention to verisimilitude and
its acknowledgement of our continually shifting relationship to nature,
that infuses the work with singular power." Paintings by the artist,
who lives in Marin County, are in the permanent collections of the San Francisco
Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum and the Metropolitan Museum, N.Y. Dixon
was included in the de Young Museum's monumental 1995 exhibition, "Facing
Eden: 100 Years of Landscape in the Bay Area." (left: Willard

Art
critic Dorothy Burkhardt calls Loftus "a subtle and elusive artist,
a painterly realist indebted to Impressionism, attuned to abstraction, convincingly
in command of his medium." The Santa Cruz resident, who received a
BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and Design and an MFA from
the University of Pennsylvania, has work in the permanent collection of
the San Jose Museum of Art and major national corporate collections, including
Bank of America, Bechtel, Hewlett Packard and American Telegraph and Telephone,
