The American West: Out of Myth, Into Reality
Some 120-plus paintings and sculptures
(c. 1825-1925) curated by Peter Hassrick, noted expert on Western Art, will
be featured in an exhibition, "The American West: Out of Myth, Into
Reality," to open Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Terra Museum of American
Art, continuing through Sunday, September 17, 2000. This major exhibition
presents not only landscapes of the American West, but also its major myths,
themes and heroes. "The American West: Out of Myth, Into Reality"
will be viewed through the lens of recent scholarship that has generated
fresh and sometimes controversial insights into the subject of American
West and American Identity. Among the artists represented are Thomas Moran,
Frederic Remington, Georgia O'Keeffe, Newell Convers Wyeth, Charles M. Russell,
George Catlin and Albert Bierstadt. (left: John Gast, American
