Tom Zetterstrom: Portraits of Trees
Lyman Allyn Museum of Art at Connecticut College announces a new exhibition of silver gelatin photographs, "Tom Zetterstrom: Portraits of Trees," opening to the public on March 19, 2000 and on view through May 7, 2000.
Visitors
will look at trees with a different perspective and with a whole new appreciation
after viewing the stunning new exhibit "Tom Zetterstrom: Portraits
of Trees." His beautiful portraits open a window to nature, revealing
its intelligence and grace, its vulnerability and grand achievements, its
architecture, and its very consciousness. Zetterstrom shows us trees as
a measure and expression of time itself. One may wonder "What are trees
doing when we humans are not watching?" Zetterstrom's sensitive photographs
answer that question. These photographic portraits also document the interaction
of trees within their own environment; they reveal nature as it affects
trees of every kind. These photographs are about much more than just the
trees to which Tom Zetterstrom is so devoted; they are about life and death
in the purest black and white visual form. Zetterstrom tree photographs
are not simply fine art, they are historical documents of the land and its
history. (left: White Oak, 1994)
Tom Zetterstrom has had numerous one-man exhibitions including
those at the Mattatuck
Museum, Bates College Museum of Art, and The Asia
Society. He has also participated in group exhibitions including High Museum

Center of Photography. Zetterstrom is represented in many public and private
collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery
of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the J. Paul
Getty Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery. The Library of Congress
owns 24 Zetterstrom photographs. (right: Shagbark Hickory 78)
