Nathan Goldstein at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College

Artist, author and professor Nathan Goldstein presents an exhibition of his paintings and drawings at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College, 700 Beacon Street, Boston. The show opens on March 27, 2000 and continues through April 30, 2000. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 30 from 5 to 7 pm.

More than forty of Goldstein's paintings and drawings are featured in the exhibition. Goldstein's subjects are often people in a reflective mood, who are shown as though they are unaware of being observed. Goldstein is fascinated by the way the conscious and subconscious play out in an artist's work. Goldstein doesn't seek to "send a message." An art teacher since 1957 and a professor at The Art Institute of Boston since 1971, Goldstein has earned a national reputation as an outstanding educator. His books on drawing, The Art of Responsive Drawing and Figure Drawing: The Structure, Anatomy, and Expressive Design of Human Form, both in their fifth editions, are considered among the best in the field and are used at colleges and universities across the country. Goldstein is credited with the creation of the foundation program at AIB, a unique program that requires all freshman to take a core of demanding studio courses focused on expression, visual perception and composition. It is this distinctive approach to the study of art that distinguishes The Art Institute of Boston from other art colleges. (right: The Gift, 1997, oil on canvas)

"Nathan Goldstein has had a full and distinguished career as both a painter and teacher," says Bonnell Robinson, Director of Exhibitions at AIB. "In both, he has sought an integration of visual and technical skills with the lively exploration of painterly concerns. We are especially pleased to exhibit the work of this wonderful artist and highly respected teacher."

Nathan Goldstein received an MFA from the school of the Art Institute of Chicago, and continued his studies at the Art Students League in New York. He has taught at a number of art schools and in 1971 became the department head of the Foundation Program at AIB. In addition to his textbooks noted above, Goldstein is the author of four additional publications. His paintings and drawings are included in a number of public and private collections. Goldstein stepped down as chair of the Foundation Department at AIB in 1999 but continues to teach. He was inducted as an academician into the National Academy of Art and Design in 1996.
