Soup to Nuts: Pop Art and Its Legacy
"Soup to Nuts: Pop Art and Its Legacy," an exhibition of works by many of the principal artists associated with the Pop Art movement will be on exhibit through May 21, 2000 at the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries at Texas A&M University.
Something of an ill-defined, collective love affair with Pop Art has been raging strong since 1962, the year the movement created an international media sensation. Pop may now claim the distinction of being the one modern style widely approved of by a general audience; Andy Warhol may well have superseded Picasso as the most recognized artist of the 20th Century.
"Soup to Nuts" presents works by many of the principal American artists associated with the movement: Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Rauchenberg, Tom Wesselmann, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Indiana, and Stuart Davis. Members of the Independent Group, Peter Blake and Eduardo Paolozzi (who founded the Pop Art movement in the late 1950s) are shown along with other important British Pop artists: David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, Alien Jones, R.D. Kitaj, Joe Tilson; and Canadians: Greg Curnoe, Joyce Wieland, and Michael Snow. Drawn from the collections of the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, the exhibit extends to acclaimed contemporary artists such as David Salle, Chuck Close and Richard Estes.
