Phippen Museum
On Location in Malibu - Members of the California Art Club
July 22 - November 5, 2000
The Phippen Museum will present a traveling exhibit by members of
the California Art Club entitled "On
Location in Malibu." Assembled by Dr. Michael Zakian, Curator of the
Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, Pepperdine
University at Malibu, the exhibit contains 64 impressionistic works
by 47 members of the California Art Club. A beautiful four-color catalog
accompanies the exhibit. (left: Anita Hampton, Malibu Canyon,

When
the initial call to artists was issued, artists logged their heavy painting
equipment over mountains and rocky terrain, through creeks, and along lengthy
stretches of beaches to capture some of the most captivating scenes indigenous
to the spectacular Malibu area. More than 80 artists submitted in excess
of 300 paintings to be juried. Dr. Zakian selected sixty of them to be included
in the exhibit, all depicting the allure of Malibu. ( left: Vic Riesau,

The
California Art Club was founded in 1909 and ranks among the oldest professional
art
organizations in the country. Early members included such leading Southern
California Impressionists as Franz A. Bischoff, Edgar Payne, Guy Rose and
William Wendt. Today the club numbers more than 1700 members internationally.
Their mission is to uphold the original artistic standards and traditions
of the club's founders. They play an important historical role by recording,
natural landscapes in the 20th and 21st centuries. (left: Gregory

In 1993, artist Peter Adams was asked by a patron member
to help revive the failing California Art
Club. Now President of the group, Peter Adams and
his beautiful wife, Elaine, have coordinated the traveling exhibition to
Prescott in addition to producing a monthly newsletter and generating Club
activities. Presently, the California Art Club is recognized as one of the
oldest, largest and most active professional art organizations in the United
States. It is respected for its reputation in fine art, including paintings,
drawing and sculpture. Plans are underway to establish a museum to exhibit
their work. (right: John Budicin, Point Dume, oil on board,
