The painting shows a tree-filled landscape at sunset. The rich fall hues are reflected in the surface of the water. The tranquil clouds reflect the setting sun in shades of blue and cream. The artist was born in Fredericksburg, Iowa, and moved with his family to Honey Grove, Texas, in 1896. He studied in Texas with artist Frank Reaugh and traveled to Europe to study with William Orowelt in Holland and William Rueloup and Paul Abram in Paris. Before his death, Bolton was awarded a grand prize by the California Society of Art. He died at the age of 41 in Rusk, Texas.
