Annual Gold Medal Exhibition
The California Art
Club (CAC), an internationally recognized organization of leading American
artists headquartered in Pasadena, California, will be holding their 90th
annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Pasadena Historical Museum, located
at 470 West Walnut Street, Pasadena, California 91103; 626/577-1660. The
dates for the exhibition are June 4 through July 30, 2000. The public is
invited to join the artists at their gala reception on Saturday, June 3
at 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM for a ticket cost of $75 per person (RSVP the museum
at 626/577-1660, ext.11). Approximately 150 paintings and sculptures will
be on view and available for acquisition, with proceeds benefiting the artists,
the Pasadena Historical Museum and the California Art Club. A 140-page color
catalogue with an in depth essay written by Jean Stern, Executive Director
of The Irvine Museum, will
accompany this exhibition.
The
exhibition will include original works by contemporary California artists
as well as a selection by early and founding CAC artists borrowed from the
collection of the Pasadena Historical Museum. Since the onset of the California
Art Club's Gold Medal Exhibitions (the first was held in 1910 at the Blanchard
Gallery in Los Angeles), the focus has been on producing the highest standards
in fine art, in both painting and sculpting. Exhibiting artists are selected
by a panel of judges who review the entries by slides. Those who qualify
to submit entries into the Gold Medal Exhibition must already be designated
"Artist" members of the California Art Club, which signifies that
they reside in California and have passed a rigid membership judging procedure.
The CAC has "Out-of-State Artist" members, however, they cannot

The Pasadena Historical Museum (PHM) was founded in 1924
as the Pasadena Historical Society. It is Pasadena's only museum and research
library devoted solely to preserving the city's local history and culture.
The museum's archival collections of over one-million historic photographs,
rare books, manuscripts, maps, architectural records, costumes, paintings
and artifacts are the largest and most comprehensive collection relating
to the rich history of the area. The museum's 1905 Fenyes Mansion provides
a glimpse into the life of a family in the early part of the century when
Pasadena's Orange Grove Boulevard was known as "Millionaires' Row."
Eva Fenyes (1849-1930), herself a watercolorist, was a patron of early California
An and held popular art salon gatherings at the mansion. Some of the early
California Art Club artists whose works are in the Fenyes collection include
Carl Oscar Borg (1879-1947), Benjamin Chambers Brown (1865-1942), John Frost
(1890-1937), and Granville Redmond (1871-1935).
