Undercurrents: Drawings by Chris Fusco-Ruch / Paintings by Ray Canty
November 21, 1999 - January 9, 2000
In Undercurrents: Drawings by Chris Fusco-Ruch, the Dakota
High School art instructor shows her large colored pencil drawings on black
paper. She chooses underwater landscapes as her subject because, "Oceans
are one of the last great areas of exploration of unknown worlds. They are
a place of discovery, wonder, and danger. The plants look like animals,
the animals look like plants. Nothing is certain. Unlike traditional landscape,
the oceans provide a softer, gentler landscape of the mind." Fusco-Ruch
has B.S., M.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Northern Illinois University. (left:

In Paintings by Ray Canty, a second exhibition,
the Peoria artist uses layers of color in his
tempera paintings on textured paper. He has exhibited
his paintings regionally and nationally, including a one-man show at Caterpillar
Tractor corporate offices and the Adirondacks National Travel Exhibition.
Canty writes, "The colors of my artistry are joyful and sensitive to
light and subject matter. My subject matter consists of local scenes, landmarks,
kids, cats, and even the kitchen sink. I try to challenge myself to make
the somewhat mundane and ordinary something quite beautiful and extraordinary."
His exhibition includes several paintings from his "Route 66: John's
Modern Cabins" series. (right: Ray Canty, No Smoking Within 50 Feet)
