Plein Air Paintings of The Old Mill by Members of the California Art Club
September 5 - December 3, 2000
The California Art Club Gallery, a nonprofit art gallery located
at the historic Old Mill in San Marino, presents its latest exhibition,
Plein Air Paintings of The Old Mill by Members of the California Art
Club from September 5 through December 3, 2000. On view are spontaneously
inspired images of the 1816 grist mill that was originally built to accommodate
the Mission San Gabriel's Spanish Franciscan Padres and their congregation.
Since its founding, The Old Mill (El Molino Viejo) has served as a source
of romantic inspiration to artists. Quaint scenes of the adobe structure
and its surroundings can be found in drawings and paintings by California's
earliest settlers and wanderers. Important artists made excursions to the
San Gabriel Mission and its Old Mill, such as Christian August Jorgensen
(1860-1935) who created a complete set of oil paintings of California's
twenty-one missions, and Jack Wilkinson Smith (1873-1949) who was a founding
member and president of the California An Club. (left: Jack Wilkinson

50 inches, Collection, The Old Mill, San Marino)
The contemporary paintings in this exhibition were selected by a panel consisting of officials from the California Art Club and The Old Mill Foundation. Nearly 200 entries by California Art Club members were submitted for consideration, of which 35 works were chosen. It is interesting to note the various interpretations that inspire today's artists when one considers the dichotomy that exists between the modern world and a slower time.
