Watercolors by Jack R. Brouwer and Mark
Mehaffey
A variety of works by two nationally
recognized Michigan watercolor painters, Jack R. Brouwer and Mark Mehaffey,
will be exhibited at the Muskegon Museum of Art through October l, 2000.
Brouwer
is a native of Grand Rapids and a regular exhibitor in the MMA's annual
Regional Exhibition. This year's juror chose Brouwer's painting, Out
to Pasture, for the Tri-Cities Chautauqua Award. A self-taught artist,
Brouwer was an advertising illustrator, graphic designer, art director,
and owner of his own agency. In 1987, he took up painting full-time. He
now has achieved signature memberships in the four most important national
societies for the medium -- the American Watercolor Society, the National
Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and the Midwest Watercolor Society
-- and has exhibited in numerous national and regional exhibitions throughout
the nation, including the prestigious "Art for the Parks" annual
competition. Brouwer's work depicts landscapes, and people and places from
around the world in a painterly but realistic style. (left: Jack

Mark
Mehaffey has been an art instructor with the Lansing Public Schools since
1974, just after his graduation with a B.F.A from Michigan State University.
His paintings have been featured in national watercolor exhibitions since
1986, and in 1999 he was awarded the Skyledge Award (Best of Show) in the
Midwest Watercolor Society's national exhibition, the 12th year he had been
juried into the show and his fifth award. His work has been featured in
seven Michigan Watercolor Society annual exhibitions. In addition, he has
achieved signature status in the American and National Watercolor Societies
and signature life member status for the Louisiana Watercolor Society and
Watercolor West. In 1996, one of Mehaffey's paintings was chosen as the
cover image for the book, Creative Wulercolor, by Mary Arm Beckwith.
Mehaffey's style often combines abstract and realistic images with lush
