Eugene Thurston: The Majesty of the Southwestern Landscape

The El Paso Museum of Art presents "Eugene Thurston: The Majesty of the Southwestern Landscape," an exhibition of 27 landscape paintings from the 1930s-1990 by El Pasoan Eugene Thurston, on view March 19 - May 21, 2000.

Eugene Thurston (1896-1993) was one of El Paso's most gifted and prolific landscape painters. While his career included ventures into caricature, lithography, and commercial illustration, Thurston is best known for his dramatic images of the American Southwest, particularly the region's majestic deserts and forests, rugged mountains, and luminous skies. A keen observer of the natural world, he painted scenic and colorful vistas that reflect his deep love of the natural world. In addition to painting, Thurston taught commercial art to hundreds of students at the El Paso Technical Institute, and he devoted much time and effort to organizing El Paso's arts community. "Eugene Thurston: The Majesty of the Southwestern Landscape" is accompanied by a 20-page, illustrated catalogue published by the El Paso Museum of Art, available in the Museum gift shop.

This exhibition is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
