Fusun Gulen: Beneath the Surface
August 21 - October 7, 2000
"Beneath the Surface" presents the recent work of West Lafayette
educator and artist Fusun Gulen. Her large-scale oils on canvas harbor subdued
emotional messages that underlie the surface treatment and immediate visual
imagery. She states, "The style of my work can be described as both
realistic and surrealistic. There is always an unexpected element in my
paintings. What I try to convey in my work is a subtle message that provokes
inner emotions. One has to look long enough to understand the deeper meaning
of the paintings. I always look for a better way to get 'inside reality'.
I want the viewer to look beyond what is initially apparent." (left:

Gulen
received a B.A. in Fine Art from Purdue University in 1975 and an M.A. in
Painting, Drawing and Print Making from the University in 1976. Her art
has been featured in group and one person shows throughout the country.
