The University Art
Gallery will feature works by renowned artist Kermit Oliver during an exhibit
that opens Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center
on the Baylor University campus. The exhibit will run through Dec. 6, 2000.
Approximately 20 paintings by Oliver, from allegorical imagery to portraits
and still lifes, will be on display.
"For
years Kermit Oliver has regaled his audiences with classically beautiful
paintings and drawings," wrote Patricia C. Johnson in an article for
the Houston Chronicle. "The artist, who lives in virtual seclusion
in Waco, composes allegories based on the Old and New Testaments, on classic
Greek and Roman mythology, and on folk tales from around the world. He presents
them in the guise of landscapes, still lifes and portraits. And though his
sources may be age-old, the contexts in which he interprets them are contemporary."

Although known throughout the world for his paintings and
as the first American to design scarves for the venerable French fashion
house Hermés, Oliver works for the U.S. Postal Service and lives
a quiet life in Waco with his wife, Katie, also an accomplished artist.
Oliver's works are in permanent collections of Houston's Museum
of Fine Arts and the Art Museum of
Southeast Texas in Beaumont.
