Charles M. Russell at Stark Museum of Art
Featured in the latest change of displays at the Stark Museum of Art are eight newly installed examples of contemporary Navajo weaving and twenty-one works by Western artist Charles M. Russell. Included in the Russell display are sixteen bronze-cast sculptures and five illustrated letters.
Two
sculptures, Snake Priest and Sleeping Thunder, are exhibited
for the first time. Other figures, such as Smoke of the Medicine Man
and Changing Outfits, have not been shown since the early 1980s.
The Russell exhibit will be on view to the public through May, 2001, and
the Navajo weavings through September, 2001. (left: Changing Outfits,

The items selected for inclusion in the Russell exhibition represent approximately one-sixth of the total of 82 bronzes and 31 illustrated letters and cards by Russell in the museum's permanent collection. The eight large Navajo weavings displayed in the foyer constitute less than 5% of the museum' s holdings in this category.
All works exhibited at the Stark Museum of Art are part of the museum's permanent inventory. Due to the limitations of exhibition space, however, no more than about 10% of the total collection is on view at any time. Therefore the museum rotates its displays on a regular basis, so that a broader range of material can be presented to the public throughout the year and from year to year. Gallery rotations occur frequently.
Major exhibitions change yearly. One can expect to see something "new" on each and every visit to the Stark Museum of Art.
