Rick Beck: Sculpture

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts presents Rick Beck: Sculpture on view from January 13 through March 11, 2001. Sponsored locally by Sherlock, Smith, & Adams, Inc., this exhibition features large, cast glass sculpture, many in the forms of objects normally seen as industrial tools-bolts, clamps, or drill bits, and the like. Beck creates his works based on forms that he sketches, adapts, and then enlarges to scales that dwarf the original source material. They are a study in conceptual opposites, representing objects or the idea of work and labor in some of nature's most fragile material. Whether he presents something small enough to fit on a table or large enough stand on its own, Beck's work offers a unique appeal because of the delicate nature of the medium.

Well-versed in the craft tradition, he has taught in some of the finest glass programs in the country. These include the Penland School of Crafts, Penland, N.C.; Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA; and the Appalachian Center for Crafts, Smithville, TN. In concert with this exhibition, the Museum Shop has on display a select group of glass objects for sale by Beck and his wife, Valerie, along with an exhibition catalogue on the sculpture of Rick Beck.
