The Art of National Geographic: A Century of Illustration
"The Art of National Geographic: A Century
of Illustration" -- a collection culled from the thousands of beautiful
and scientifically accurate illustrations commissioned and published in
National Geographic over the past hundred years -- is being exhibited
through September 30, 2000, at the Society of Illustrators Museum of American
Illustration. (left: front panel of invitation card for opening of
exhibition)
The National Geographic Society's illustrators have taken readers to places beyond the reach of the camera's lens, from a visit to the Earth in the age of dinosaurs to a view of Saturn from inside its rings. The exhibit's vivid paintings represent some of their finest work selected from more than the 12,000 illustrations in the Society's archives. Represented among the 40 works in the collection is the art of such masters of American Illustration as Newell Convers Wyeth, Tom Lovell (historical sagas of ancient Rome, Viking Explorations and the Crusades), James Gurney, creator of Dinotopia (a fantasy world about a civilization inhabited by intelligent dinosaurs), Andrew Wyeth and Roger Tory Peterson.
The illustrations on display are also featured in the new book "The Art of National Geographic: A Century of Illustration."
