Impressions of New England
"Impressions of New England" and an annual exhibit by the Signature Quilt Artists will both open on August 5, 2000 and run through Labor Day and be open again on September 15 - 17, 2000 in conjunction with Bennington's annual Quilt and Antique Car Show.
This
first annual "Impressions of New England" exhibit and sale was
juried by the
Art
Center, with artists from around the country submitting their work. The
show is a competition, with award money being offered for the top honors.
Over eighty pieces are included in the show, with subjects including sugar
houses, maritime work, covered bridges and fall foliage. Artists participating
in the show include those who have shown at the Center before as well as
artists from surrounding areas who heard of the show from art leagues and
magazines. "We do have artists from as far away as California and Arizona,
but most of the exhibiting artists are from the Northeast," says Elizabeth
Small, curator. "Some of the Plein Air Painters who were here for last
year's show submitted work that was completed during their stay in Bennington,
so we also have quite a few local scenes, including ones of the monument
and our covered bridges." (left: John Swatsley, Coastal Schooners,

The
second show opening August 5th is a collection of fiber art from the Signature
Quilt
Artists, a group of 13 women from New York state. Thirty one quilts will
hang in the show, many of which have embellishments such as beading and
embroidery. Quilt styles include traditional, representational and abstract,
with many of the works made from fabrics that have been hand-painted or
dyed by the artists. (left: Ina Stentiford, Looking for a Place

An opening reception is scheduled for the exhibitions on August 13 from 2 - 5pm. Artists from both shows will be in attendance and hors d' oeuvres will be served.
