Art and the Animal
July 23 - September 24, 2000
A major exhibition of works by members of The Society of Animal
Artists opened at the R. W. Norton Art Gallery on July 23, 2000. The Society,
which 
was
formed in 1960, with headquarters at the Salmagundi Art Club in New York
City, is dedicated to the artistic portrayal of animals. By maintaining
the highest levels of artistic achievement, it strives for recognition of
animal art as an important idiom of contemporary expression. This is the
third exhibition by members of the Society to be held at the Norton Art
Gallery The previous two, shown in 1993 and 1997, proved to be very popular

Artwork by 60 of the Society's members from the United
States, Canada, Europe, South Africa, and Australia are included in the
exhibit. Many of the world's preeminent wildlife artists are represented,
including Guy Coheleach, Nancy Howe, Dan Ostermiller, Dine Paravano, Richard
Sloan, and Kent Ullberg, among others. To capture their subjects, the artists
use an assortment of media including oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor,
pastel, scratchboard, alabaster, and bronze. (left: Dino Paravano,

A
fully illustrated catalogue of the exhibition is available as is a color
poster 
entitled
"Old Man of the Forest" (Orangutan) by Australian painter Kevin
Redmayne. The exhibit will continue through September 24 and is open to
the public free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays,
and from I to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The museum is handicapped-accessible
and wheelchairs are available at no charge. (left: Francis Sweet,
