Janie Cohen Appointed Director of the Robert Hull Fleming Museum

Janie Cohen has been appointed the new Director of the Robert Hull Fleming Museum. For the prior eleven years, Cohen held the position of Curator and Assistant Director of the Fleming. In that capacity she organized numerous exhibitions that provided Vermonters with unique opportunities to view the work of internationally known Modern and Contemporary artists. Among these projects were Deep Blues: Bill Traylor 1854-1949, featuring work by the acclaimed "outsider artist" Bill Traylor, and the popular exhibition Picasso: Inside the Image, Prints from the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, which broke attendance records at the Fleming. Cohen published exhibition catalogues on Picasso and American artist Ree Morton that gained national and international visibility for the Museum. Cohen is also responsible for lining up a blockbuster year for the Fleming in 2003 which will include Andy Warhol: Work and Play in the spring and Prints from the Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam.

"We are very fortunate to have Ms. Cohen's decade of experience with the Fleming Museum as Curator and Assistant Director, her tremendous knowledge of the museum world, expertise in fund raising and grant writing, and her network of support and contacts to turn to at this time," said John Bramley, interim provost at the University of Vermont, in a letter to the UVM community.

In addition to organizing temporary exhibitions, early in her tenure Cohen initiated the reinstallation of the permanent collection galleries with the goal of better representing the cultural breadth of the Museum's collections. Cohen merged and reorganized the European and American collections in the European and American Gallery that opened in 2000. Museum visitors speak enthusiastically about the beautifully renovated gallery.

Before joining the Fleming Museum staff, Cohen's professional work included working as an independent curator in Boston, Massachusetts, and holding positions at the New England Foundation of the Arts in Cambridge, and the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY.

Among her goals as Director, Ms. Cohen intends to further link the Museum's collections and programs to the University of Vermont's curriculum, and increase accessibility to the Fleming for all Vermonters. With the Museum included as a priority in the University of Vermont's upcoming comprehensive campaign, Cohen plans to raise endowment funds to secure the financial future of the Fleming Museum.

Cohen replaces the Fleming Museum's director of thirteen years, Ann Porter who retired in June 2002.
