Joseph Cornell: Navigating
the Imagination
November17 - February 19, 2007
Checklist for the exhibition
- Note on artwork titles and dates: Cornell did not title or date
most of his works. Many examples have been published with generic titles
derived from the names of his series or with multiple versions of descriptive
titles assigned by others. Titles for some works in the exhibition will
vary from previously published versions because of direct observation and
archival research. Titles given in italics appear on the works, inscribed,
typed or collaged by the artist. A colon in italicized titles indicates
the hierarchy of title and subtitle, based on the sequence in which the
phrasing appears. In the absence of inscriptions, works are designated
as "untitled," with descriptive titles noted in parentheses or
brackets. Parentheses denote phrasing derived from relevant series, Cornell's
papers, period gallery checklists and announcements prepared by the artist,
or wording associated historically with specific examples. Brackets indicate
descriptive titles devised by the curator. When dates do not appear on
the works, circa dates have been assigned based on archival resources and
comparative analysis. Unless a specific range of dates is indicated, a
circa date incorporates a three-year fluctuation in either direction. Examples
of Cornell's collages broadly associated with the 1930s have been assigned
more specific circa dates for the first time.
