American Reflections: The Collection of Dr. Timothy McLaughlin
September 10 - October 24, 2010
Continuing in the exhibition tradition of featuring the collections of local collectors, the New Britain Museum of American Art presents American Reflections: The Collection of Dr. Timothy McLaughlin, September 10 through October 24, 2010.
McLaughlin, a Farmington resident, orthopedic surgeon and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the New Britain Museum of American Art, has amassed over the past two decades what director Douglas Hyland characterizes as a "personal" rather than "historical" collection; one that is the direct result of the creative activity of one individual.
The works span the last two centuries of artistic development in primarily Connecticut and secondarily the Northeast and include artists from the Hudson River School, such as Frederick Kensett and Asher B. Durand, as well as American Impressionist masters, including Childe Hassam and Henry Ward Ranger. Contemporary artists are represented by works by Sol LeWitt, Tom Yost and Graydon Parrish. Other pieces of interest are Billingsgate by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Times Square by Guy C. Wiggins, and a sculpture entitled Bacchante and Infant Faun by Fredrick MacMonnies. Over 40 paintings, sculptures and works on paper will be featured.
The inherent connection among the paintings, sculpture and works on paper according to Erica E. Hirshler, who wrote the introductory essay in the accompanying catalogue, is that the collection is laden with art that encourages -- and, in many cases, requires -- contemplation and meditation. McLaughlin's collection asks the viewers to forge personal connections with the artworks and learn to see the beauty of the region through these varied artists' eyes.
The 80-page catalogue features an introduction by exhibition curator Alexander Noelle, collector's statement by McLaughlin, lead essay by Erica E. Hirshler entitled "Connecticut Composed," 30 other object entries and a fully illustrated checklist of the entire collection. It will be available in the Museum Shop.
