Wichita Art Museum: 75
Years of American Art
November 14, 2010 - July 24, 2011
Introductory wall panel
In honor of its seventy-fifth
anniversary, the Wichita Art Museum published Wichita Art Museum: 75
Years of American Art. The book includes an
introductory
history of the Museum, a catalogue section that features at least one work
of art for each year the Museum has been collecting, and a concluding section
on the potential future of the collection. Beginning with Bruce Moore's
Saint Francis -- the Wichita Art Museum's first acquisition -- the
objects that represent each year of collecting were chosen not because they
are especially famous or valuable, but because they are indicative of either
a particular time in the Museum development of a general characteristic
of the overall collection. (right: Frederick Frieseke, 1874-1939,
The Yellow Tulip (ca.1902). Oil on canvas. Gift of William and Martha
Connelly.)
This exhibition features the majority of the works of art
included in the anniversary publication, arranged largely in the order in
which they were acquired. The nature of the exhibition juxtaposes objects
that otherwise would probably never be shown next to each other. Yet frequently
the unorthodox juxtapositions are visually rich and allow us to see familiar
works in a new way. For example, the presence of Ed Davison's Morning
Sun next to Christopher Wilmarth's Expanding Drawing suggests
an icy beauty in Wilmarth's work.
Due to practical concerns, not all works illustrated in
the anniversary publication are included in this exhibition. Mary Cassatt's
Mother and Child and Frederick Frieseke's Yellow Tulip, for
example, are featured in the American Impressionism exhibition in the Carlene
and Lee Banks Rotunda Gallery, and the Tripod Jaguar Effigy Vessel
is among the other Pre-Columbian objects in the Cessna Art Investigation
Gallery
Catalogue
The purpose of the volume, Wichita Art Museum: 75
Years of American Art is to document the remarkable growth of the Wichita
Art Museum. The exhibition opening Sunday, November 14, by
the same name, will display most every work of art featured
in the volume.
Each object that was selected for inclusion in the volume,
is based on the object's importance to the collection, and the contribution
to the Museum's overall vision. Both book and exhibition chronicle a history
of not only the Museum and those who brought the institution to fruition,
but also the city of Wichita and the surrounding community.
Rarely does the Museum display all of these important and
popular works at one time; making this exhibition a once-in-a-lifetime event
for lovers of WAM's fine collection. (left: front cover of the exhibition
