Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site
During the summer of 1995, Mr. Nowlan served as the Sculptor-In-Residence at Saint-Gaudens National Historic
Site, which hosts the oldest artist residency program in the National Park Service. Based in the site's historic Ravine
Studio, Nowlan pursued his artwork, demonstrated sculptural techniques to park visitors, and also found time to
teach sculpture workshops for children and adults.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America's foremost sculptors, was renowned for his great public
monuments, like Boston's Shaw Memorial, commemorating the famed Massachusetts 54th Regiment, the Gen.
William T. Sherman monument in New York City, and the "Standing Lincoln" monument in Chicago.
The Sherman and the Lincoln, were just two of many celebrated sculptures Saint-Gaudens produced at his Cornish
studio. The Wildland Firefighters Monument is the first public monument created at this site since Saint-Gaudens'
death in 1907.
