KTEH (San Francisco Bay Area, California) welcomes viewers to bid on more than 700 pieces of art during the Seventh Annual KTEH On-Air Art Auction from Wednesday, November 5 through Sunday, November 9, 1997. The high-energy, aesthetically uplifting event broadens its audience nationally on Friday, November 7 from 8 p.m. to 11 p·m· (West Coast time), when KTEH invites public TV viewers in Los Angeles and Denver, via a live simulcast, to participate in one night of glorious auction.
"The caliber of artwork submitted this year is unprecedented in quality," said Rick Lore, KTEH's director of special events. "Thanks to the generosity of the local, regional and national artist community, over 700 works in six media - painting and drawing, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, photography and crafts, will be offered for bid."
Individuals may start bidding now at www.kteh.org, where KTEH provides people an opportunity to pre-bid online. The highest pre-bid will be the starting place for the live, televised auction. Those who bid online need to individually follow up, watching KTEH to bid on their favorite item when it comes up on the air.
The KTEH On-Air Art Auction features an exciting new component this year. Twenty select artists from around the country have been invited to offer works for bid for a live simulcast at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose on Friday, November 7 in an event titled 'The Emerging City."
Led by renowned artist Clyde Aspevig, who serves as guest curator for the event, many of the artists will be in attendance. A "live" audience will be bidding from the Fairmont and public TV viewers of KTEH in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, KOCE in Los Angeles and KBDI in Denver will be encouraged to call in bids as well. "With a potential audience of almost 20 million, we recommend you call in quickly if a work strikes your fancy," said Lore.
KTEH would like to extend a big round of applause and gracious thanks to Art Auction Chair Paul Bingham for his invaluable assistance, guidance and support. Since 1991, over 3,000 works of art in all media have been donated by Bay Area and national artists, raising almost $750,000. The KTEH On-Air Art Auction is underwritten this year by a generous grant from Altera.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers really make the auction happen. KTEH anticipates more than 300 individuals will volunteer time and energy to assist in all aspects of the KTEH On-Air Art Auction. Interested volunteers are encouraged to call Kimberly Blisard in KTEH special events, (408) 795-5402, to sign up.
Winners from the Juried Exhibition
KTEH invited some of the best area curators to judge pieces submitted for consideration for the general auction by the August 1997 deadline. The results of the juried competition were slated to be on display at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara from Oct. 9 to 19, 1997. Below is a list of the winners:
