Distinguished Artist Series
Frank Coburn
by Bradley J. Delaney

Among the artists of the early Los
Angeles school, Coburn may have been the most adventurous in range of subject
matter. In style, too, he was by no means limited, drawing from various
traditions as the subject or expressive situation dictated. He received
the foundations of an academic training at the Art Institute of Chicago,
and the training shows in many thoughtfully organized compositions. But
Coburn's academic background did not constrain or overwhelm him. He was
essentially self-taught, allowing his personal experience of life to assume
the principal role in forming his style.
