The Frye Art Museum Celebrates Contemporary and Historical Women Artists

In cooperation with the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), Washington, D.C., the Frye Art Museum will host a series of programs from May 13 through May 16 intended to increase public awareness of historical and contemporary women artists.

Celebrating Women in the Arts will provide an opportunity to explore the often overlooked careers of women artists, past and present. The event includes a display of selected works by women artists drawn from the Frye Art Museum's permanent collection and a local private collection, a symposium of national experts on women artists, demonstrations by professional women artists, and a Ladies Musical Club Concert featuring women composers. In addition to these events, the recently restored Cumaean Sibyl, on loan from the National Museum of Women in the Arts, will be presented to the public on the evening of May 13 at the Frye Art Museum following a keynote address by Wilhelmina Holladay, founder of the NMWA. The painting was completed at the age of twenty-four by a prolific 18th century artist, Angelica Kauffman.
