The National Museum of Women in the Arts, founded in 1981 and opened in 1987, is the only museum in the world dedicated solely to celebrating the achievements of women in the visual, performing, and literary arts. The art collection encompasses varied media and contains approximately 2,500 works by more than 650 women artists including Camille Claudel, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Mary Cassatt. Research facilities contain 11,000 volumes and files on more than 17,000 women artists from all periods and countries. NMWA's membership of almost 40,000 includes people from all 50 states, with chapters in 20 states and an International Advisory Board.
