1999 Biennial Regional Jurors' Choice Exhibition at Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery

artists have won awards in the 1999 Biennial Regional Jurors' Choice Exhibition
at Keene State College's Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery. Juror John Stromberg
of Boston University said he was very impressed with the quality of artwork
submitted to the competition which was open to artists living within 30
miles of Keene. He chose 83 pieces of art for the regional exhibit, stating
there was enough quality work to hang in two other shows.
The Thorne juried exhibit will run from Saturday, Feb.6 to Friday, March 12, 1999.
All together there were 436 pieces submitted by 165 artists,
with 43 of these artists chosen for the Thorne juried exhibit. The juror
chose a total of 83 works for the Thorne's Biennial Regional Juried exhibit
because he decided that several works by the same artists should be displayed
so viewers could get a feel for the artists' style.
"I decided to focus on creating a strong exhibition,
one that could reflect the great diversity of art practiced in the area
and still work as an integrated whole itself," said Stomberg. "To
this end, I have selected a greater number of works by a fewer number of
artists than might be expected, in an attempt to give the exhibition its
own visual coherence. In selecting this exhibition, I was presented with
a delightful problem - far more worthy paintings, prints, photographs, drawings
and sculpture than I could include in the final installation."
The juror's choice of Best in Show was awarded to Richard
Heller of Brattleboro for an acrylic on canvas called Eurydice. Second
Place was given to another Brattleboro artist, Petria Mitchell, for an oil
on paper work entitled Cadmium and Prussian Woods. Third Place went
to Tim Giddings, also of Brattleboro, for an oil stick and pencil work called
Crowd in a Square. Five Honorable Mention Awards were given to Robert
Sargent Fay of Hancock, Anita S. Hunt of Colrain, Mass., Al Karevy of Richmond,
Eve Kenyon of Keene, and Lisa P. McCoy of Brattleboro. Each of these eight
artists will receive cash awards. In addition, Thorne gallery visitors will
select a People's Choice Commendation, with a $100 cash award, to be announced
March 3.
This year Keene State will be showing more work by these regional artists in a Campus Choice exhibit at the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond and the L. P. Young Student Center. The Campus Choice show will run concurrently with the Thorne's Biennial Regional Juried Exhibition, Saturday, Feb. 6, to Friday, March 12.
