Barbara Lyman at the Springville Museum of Art
September 1 through September 30, 1999
Barbara Lyman was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. and lives in Prove, Utah with her husband and son. She is a senior BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) student at Brigham Young University in Provo, majoring in painting. At Brigham Young, she was awarded first place in the Vera Hinckley Mayhew Awards (Fine Arts Division), the Olena K. Lewis Scholarship, the Paul Boshard Scholarship and several talent awards.
Her
work has been shown in national, state and regional shows including those
at Springville Museum of Art-Springville, Utah (and was reproduced in the
Museum's catalog), Central Arts Collective, Tucson, Arizona; St. George
Museum of Art-St. George, Utah (receiving an Honorable Mention); The Kimball
Art Center-Park City, Utah; Eccles Community Art Center-Ogden, Utah.
Barbara says of her art: "I find myself painting in both an intuitive and analytical way. The first is a look at the natural world outside of myself such as in landscape and still life. Instinct and spontaneity drive these paintings. The second explores the inner world of my imagination and intellect and is more introspective and measured.
I love color-the brighter and more jewel-like the better. When I explore harmonies and contrasts, I search for just the perfect element to solve the color puzzle in a composition. It is so exciting when seemingly impossible solutions are found. It is a satisfying challenge, also, to create one of my more inward looking paintings that exactly mirrors the vision in my mind."
The exhibition opened September 1 and continues through
September 30, 1999
