Treasures from the Collection: Three Centuries of Art in the American South

After a month of reinstallation, the Gibbes Museum of Art reopened its Main Gallery revealing breathtaking works of art from its permanent collection The new exhibition is entitled, Treasures from the Collection: Three Centuries of Art in the American South. "I am so excited about our new exhibition of art work," says Angela Mack, Curator of Collections at the Gibbes. "Some of these paintings have never been seen by this community because of their prior condition. The Gibbes has had these valuables restored and can now take pride in sharing them with the public."

This exhibition highlights some of the Gibbes' most exquisite Southern American paintings from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Featured artists include Washington Allston, Samuel Morse, Rembrandt Peale, Edmund C. Tarbell, Robert Henri, and Childe Hassam. On display are vibrant landscapes as well as genre paintings that include American impressionistic work.

The Gibbes Museum of Art cultivates the arts and art education through collecting, restoring, displaying and interpreting works of art. It is Charleston's only art museum, whose mission includes preserving and promoting art for present and future generations.
