Hooshang: Chiseling on Canvas

 

The artist Hooshang has just completed a month-long solo exhibition at Louisiana State University-Shreveport - "Chiseling on Canvas" - with two more one-person shows scheduled in the next six months.

The LSU-S exhibit, from August 12 to September 10, 1999, featured acrylic washes ranging from figurative to floral to landscape. Joanne Harris, art critic for The (Shreveport, La.) Times wrote of his work: "'Chiseling on Canvas' ... provides a good look at a somewhat unorthodox approach to painting ... There are times when one must carefully stay between the lines in the coloring book and other times when the crayons must be applied in great splotches of color." Hooshang's style is the latter, she explained. "This is one of those rare shows with appeal to art lovers with preferences ranging across the entire spectrum from traditional to avant garde."

The title of the show is explained through a portion of Hooshang's artist's statement: "Sometimes I remove parts of the image and paint over it - and again wash and clean up until I get close to what I'm looking for. I 'chisel' on canvas with my brushes, my cloths and my fingers. And I will continue the process ... until my sculpture is shaped."

Hooshang maintains a working studio in Ruston, Louisiana. His work is carried by galleries throughout the South and Southwest. An upcoming solo exhibition will be at Keathley University Center Gallery at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
