1999 Arts for the Parks Top 100 Exhibition
The National Park Academy of the Arts
announced the winning artists of the 1999 Arts for the Parks Top 100
Exhibition at the historic Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National
Park during its 13th Annual Banquet. The banquet ceremony was held Saturday
evening, September 18th, 1999 with an audience of nearly 500 people, and
honored those artists in attendance for their artistic, creative interpretations
of our National Parks. Jurors for the 1999 competition
were Mr. J. Russell Jinishian of Fairfield, CT, Mrs. Jeanette Cantrell Rady
of Nashville, TN and Ms. Lilliane Francuz of Cheyenne, WY.
The
$50,000 Grand Prize Cash Award went to Dean Mitchell of Overland Park, Kansas
for his rendition of "French Quarter Coachman"
set in Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve, located in New
Orleans, Louisiana. The intriguing watercolor portrait of a coachman at
ease atop his horse-drawn carriage represents an interesting contrast between
the modern and the historic context of the French Quarter in
New Orleans, and shows one of the many aspects of this small but well-known
national historic park. Mitchell's painting was selected from over 1,700
other images submitted for the competition this 
year by artists from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Virgin
Islands, Japan. Sweden and Canada. Mr. Mitchell has been in the Arts
for the Parks Top 100 nine different times, (many of those years with
multiple entries), was the designer of the U.S. Postal Service's Jazz
Series, and has received the Allied Artists of America Gold Medal.
Recognized as an outstanding contemporary artist who works in a variety
of media, Mr. Mitchell also has two more paintings still available for sale

Dunnegan Gallery of Art, from March 5 - 31), Grand Canyon, Arizona (Kolb
Studio, from April 12 - June 4), Estes Park, Colorado (Cultural Arts Council
