In reaction to the demand for this new American perspective, the California School painters began to record the local character, people, and atmosphere familiar to them. They worked to depict the regional landscape, ranging from farms to beaches, and the activities of California towns and cities in a lively narrative form. Their search for an authentic indigenous style to capture the character of this area resulted in bold and powerful images, as well as a special way of painting light and form.
