Jasper F. Cropsey 's A Summer Afternoon Donated to Saginaw Art Museum

The Saginaw Art Museum is very pleased to announce a wonderful addition to its collection of landscape paintings by American artists. Dr. Thomas O. Lohr and his sister, Frances Lohr, have donated ,''A Summer Afternoon, " in memory of their parents, Dr. and Mrs. Oliver Lohr. The work measures 27 x 42 inches and is a lovely rustic scene of making hay along a river with a pastel lit sky.

The artist, Jasper F. Cropsey (1823-1900), was born in the state of New York and witnessed such toils along the Hudson River. His initial training was in architecture and he designed and supervised the construction of the Sixth Avenue EL stations of New York City. He studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York, as well as in London, England and Rome, Italy. Cropsey is best known for his Hudson River landscapes. His passion and specialty was capturing the varied palette of autumn scenes.
