Percy Gray
Marin County, 1929
watercolor on paper, 19 1/2 x 37 3/4 inches
These works, selected from Donald Head's extraordinary collection of early California paintings, have never before been presented as a group to the public. Focusing exclusively on landscape imagery from the 1870s to the 1930s, Holding Patterns includes works by Albert Bierstadt, William Keith, and Thomas Hill, whose descriptive realism capture the grandeur of Yosemite and the Sierra; the Impressionist-inspired plein air painters of the Southland; and the Tonalist and Society of Six painters of the Bay Area.
