17th Annual Outdoor Arts Festival

The 17th Annual Outdoor Arts Festival of the Bruce Museum takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11, 1998, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Museum. The juried event features 77 selected artists from across the country exhibiting paintings, photography, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces which will all be available for purchase. The festival also includes music, family activities, and food. Admission is $3 and includes admission to the Bruce Museum. Members and children-under-5 are free.

"The exhibitors this year are especially high in quality due to the many favorable reviews the festival has been receiving," said Sue Brown, Festival Coordinator. "Sculpture in particular will have a very strong presence this year." The event was named one of the top 50 art festivals in the country by the Harris Rhodes List and one of the top 200 festivals by Sunshine Artist Magazine. Art Fair Sourcebook awarded it a Certificate of Excellence.

The 77 exhibitors are chosen from hundreds of potential applicants. Those invited to exhibit at the Festival compete for cash prizes in six categories: oils and acrylic on canvas, water color and acrylic on paper and under glass, graphics and drawings, mixed media, sculpture, and photography.

In addition to individual category prizes, there are two major awards given: "Best in Show," and the top prize of "Museum's Choice Award." Judging the Festival this year are Barbara Gray, international artist, printmaker, painter, and lecturer; Joanne Kuebler, executive director of the Arts Student League, New York, New York; and Debra Taubner, sculptor and 3-D teacher at Westhill High School.

"This is one of the few remaining art festivals that retains the standards for an 'originals only' show. That means the works presented are all original and one-of-a-kind, signed by the artists," said Sue Brown. "The artwork available for purchase represents a wide variety of price ranges."

The 17th Annual Outdoor Arts Festival of the Bruce Museum also features live music both days from noon to 4 p.m. Featured guests on Saturday will be the band Inca Campers, whose music includes lively percussion and creative lyrics. On-site food and beverage concessions offer a wide variety of refreshments throughout the weekend with a menu ranging from health food to hot dogs to Middle Eastern cuisine.
