Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site
The Wildland Firefighters Monument honors the hundreds of brave men and women who risk their lives each year
battling forest fires. Since 1910, more than 600 people have died while fighting wildland fires. This sculpture
consists of three, bronze, heroic-size figures, working a "fire line."
Sculptor-In-Residence Lawrence Nowlan
Lawrence Nowlan is a native of Philadelphia and specializes in figurative sculpture and bas relief. He is the first artist
in his family since his grandfather, Philip Nowlan, creator of Buck Rogers. Larry attended Millersville University in
Pennsylvania from 1983-1987, where he began his long-standing interest in sculpture. There, he also served as the
teacher's assistant in the school foundry, overseeing the bronze casting operation. After graduation, Nowlan worked
in a graphics firm for the next seven years, the last five as an art director. In 1994, he resumed his studies in
sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and it was the hands-on approach of the faculty that inspired
him to pursue sculpture as a career. Later that year, he enrolled in a two year program at the noted New York
Academy of Art, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture.
