Baeder: Pleasant Journeys and Good Eats along the Way is a 2008 film that documents the work, life, and personality of one of the most important photorealist painters working today, John Baeder. "For more than thirty-five years, John's passionate interest in diners has led him to become the preeminent chronicler of a uniquely American form of roadside architecture," states Kevin Grogan, Director of the Morris Museum of Art and one of the executive producers of the film. "Critics have commented on his technical virtuosity, but he is a virtuoso with a purpose-creating a record of the architecture that surrounds the homely dining experience. This role as an historic preservationist sets him apart from his peers and identifies him as unique among contemporary realists."

Produced by Film House, this DVD includes the twenty-nine minute film Pleasant Journeys and Good Eats along the Way that was created in association with the Morris Museum of Art exhibit of the same name. The film includes interviews with, among others, former NEA chairman Bill Ivey; prominent collectors Alice Zimmerman, Howard Stringer, Trey Lipmann, and Jewel and Barry Coburn; art historian Robert Mode; artist Marilyn Murphy, photographer Jim McGuire, museum directors Lois Riggins-Ezzell and Kevin Grogan; and singer/songwriters Pat Alger, Kent Blazy, Fred Koller, Dave Pomeroy, and Guy Clark. Also included with the DVD is a photo portfolio of 275 images tracing all the stages of Baeder's work, from his earliest "postcard paintings" to his most recent roadside images, as well as several photos of the artist.

The film will be screened at the Tennessee State Museum in conjunction with its presentation of the retrospective exhibition of John Baeder's works through February 15, 2009. Artist Biography
 
One of America's most-admired realist painters, John Baeder was born on December 24, 1938,inSouth Bend, Indiana, and shortly afterward, moved with his family to Atlanta where he was raised. He attended Auburn University before embarking on a career in advertising in 1960. He pursued a very successful career as an art director for ad agencies, in Atlanta and New York City and left the ad agency, McCann-Erickson, in April 1972 to embark on his new career as a painter.
 
During his years in New York, Baeder kept his technique sharp by drawing, painting, and taking photographs, while his day job as an art director kept him focused on American material culture. He also began to collect old postcards of roadside America whose images were grounded by the early anonymous street photographer and early color lithography. They helped to inspire him to make the transition from the world of advertising to the world of art.
 
In September 1972, Ivan Karp of the well known SoHo gallery in New York, OK Harris, began exhibiting Baeder's paintings. Since then Baeder's work has been the subject of more than thirty solo exhibitions, and it has been included in more than 150 group shows. Baeder's paintings can be found in the permanent collections of many noteworthy American museums, including those of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Norton Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Newark Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Morris Museum of Art, to cite just a few, as well as corporate and private collections in Europe and the United States too numerous to mention.
 
The author of three popular books-Diners(New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1978; Diners revised and updated, 1995), Gas, Food, and Lodging(New York: Abbeville Press, 1982, hardcover; 1986, softcover), and Sign Language: Street Signs as Folk Art(New York: Harry N. Barbara Kruger - Pictures and Words, (c) 1996, running time: 28 minutes. DVD/VHS. Program 46 from Art/New York, which says of this video: "This program looks at the art of one of the most engaging artists working today. Barbara Kruger culls her imagery and words from the world of advertising and the print media. She makes work that not only questions the traditional modes of making art, but work that forcefully interjects itself into our preconceived values and social systems. Seen are two recent shows at the Mary Boone Gallery in SOHO as well as work done in the streets of New York. In interviews, author KATE LINKER and critic PETER SCHJELDAHL discuss the artist's work."

Bearden Plays Bearden: 28 minutes 1980. "This presentation covers major events in the life of the prominent black American artist Romare Bearden. Bearden himself discusses the development of his distinctive collage painting style and traces many of the roots of his work to his early memories of growing up in rural North Carolina."

Beatrice Wood: Mama of Dada. This documentary on the life of potter Beatrice Wood provides a glimpse into her life, loves and influences. Included are rare archival photographs, original artwork, and insightful commentary by art historians and interviews with Beatrice herself. Written and directed by Tom Neff. 93. 55 min. Video/C 8471. Behind the Scenes Series, Carrie Mae Weems is a 30 minute 1999. video released by First Run Features based on a series by PBS. Presents American photographer Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953) demonstrating how she decides what to photograph. Discusses how subject matter and composition combine to create meaning in a photograph. The noted photographer, with help from William Wegman, shows how to use composition and content in a photograph. Behind the Scenes with Wayne Thiebaud is a 30 minute 1992 video released by First Run Features based on a series by PBS. Follows American painter Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920) as he uses drawing to expand children's understanding of line from simple outline to its creation of volume, shape, feeling, and movement

Benny Andrews: The Visible Man is a 28 minute L&S Video hosted by Geoffrey Holder, created and produced by Linda Freeman and written and directed by David Irving. A self-styled innovator, Benny Andrews, an African-American artist, creates collages and paintings of stunning humanity. Growing up in the 1930's in a sharecropper's family, Andrews shines a sensitive light on these invisible people through his drawings, paintings and collages. ISBN 1-882660-10-2

Ben Shahn: Passion for Justice. This program presents the biography of an artist who fused political awareness with modernism. Rare television and radio interviews recorded before Shahn's death in 1969 complement a retrospective of his paintings, sketches, and photographs. Betty La Duke: An Artist's Journey from the Bronx to Timbuktu is a 30 minute 1996 video that follows six decades of La Duke's life and art to date: her beginnings with immigrant parents; the influence of Native and African-American artists; travels to third-world countries; and her own dynamic paintings.

 

 

 

Betye & Alison Saar: Conjure Women of the Arts is a 28 minute L&S video, ISBN 1-882660-06-4, created and produced by Linda Freeman and written and directed by David Irving, which examines the personal and artistic relationship between artist Betye Saar and daughter Alison Saar. The artists' enthusiasm and originality make for an engaging and wonderful video. It shows both artists working in their studios, discussing their influences, and collaborating on the installation piece, House of Gris Gris. Borderlands: Gerald Clarke, Cahuilla Artist Crossing the Line. Of this 47 minute 2005 DVD directed by Sean Owen, National Film Network says: "Gerald Clarke's return to the Cahuilla reservation opens this film about his life, art and people.
